Its population was around 950,000 in the 2000 census, but had decreased to 640,000 by 2020, reflecting a decline over the past several decades due to urban reconstruction and economic changes. During the heyday of the automotive industry, it was known as the “Motor City” and provided numerous automotive-related jobs, but subsequent competition and economic shifts led to challenges for the city’s economy. Decline in the automotive industry, economic issues, urban blight, and concerns about public safety have prompted efforts for urban revitalization projects and community revival to address these issues.

ベル・アイル水族館 / Belle Isle Aquarium

ベル・アイル水族館は、デトロイト川に浮かぶベル・アイルという島に位置しています。1904年8月 18 日にオープンし、2005年4月3日に閉館した時は北米で継続的に運営されている公立水族館としては最も古い水族館でした。水族館は開館 108 周年にあたる 2012年8月18日にリニューアルオープンしました。水族館は現在、コミュニティの資金提供とベル アイル保護団体により一般入場無料で運営されています。
